Blog Downloads

All the blog articles are given at the end of each month as PDF (shorthand and text) and a ZIP file containing MP3 dictations. One blog per month is also given as a Facility Drill book PDF and as an additional dictation at 40wpm. An additional Facility Drill is occasionally given for theory subjects.

High Speed Dictation Versions

I have taken all the Short Letters and Long Letters blogs and produced a high speed dictation version for every practice paragraph (omitting any intro paragraphs). Each MP3 file consists of one paragraph repeated at speeds from 100 to 200 wpm inclusive. The ZIP files are given in a separate High Speed table at the foot of this page. Two of the speeds are new recordings and from these the inbetween speeds have been achieved using Audacity.

PDF

The PDFs give the shorthand and text, without photos, suitable for printing for A4 or cut in half for A5 binder. The coloured inks used in the on-screen versions are all converted to blue for the Blog PDFs, and to black for the Facility Drills.

MP3

Each ZIP file contains an MP3 for each article, plus a TXT file listing the articles and timings. The speeds are on average in the 80's and 90's. There is an additional slow dictation of one article per month at 40wpm. If this speed is easy for you, they can be used as stamina and/or neatness practice, as some of them are 20-30 minutes long.

Each dictation MP3 consists of the title, approx 3 blank seconds, the article, approx 3 blank seconds, plus final hand bell sound. The seconds and speed given in the TXT list are calculated only on the article part only. The speed of each MP3 is recorded in the metadata under "Genre" and the word count under "Year", so if you extract and store all the various months' MP3s in one folder, you can sort on speed or length, as well as on file name. You can change the speed of any dictation using Audacity's "Change Tempo" setting. These files are undergoing gradual re-recording to improve the quality.

Facility Drill Book PDF

Each month's slow dictation is also available as a facility drill book, and some months have an extra drill book. Each drill book has the full text at the end, but for notes on the outlines see the actual blog article.

These drills help you to write smoothly and accurately, and get the hand into the habit of writing without stopping and starting. They are a preparation for taking dictation in the normal way onto empty paper. Facility drill books should not be used for actual dictation practice, as it is essential to be able to recall outlines in response to the sounds, instantly and without any help. It may be helpful to use a different colour ink, or pencil to write your shorthand, so you can see which lines are which. For further on this type of practice, see Blog March 2015 Facility_Drills
